Technology of QIC Tape

QIC technology was introduced specifically for the applications of backup data storage. It has drive units of single capstan that contains read/write magnetic heads and electronics for writing/reading, functions of system interface and motion control. The QIC tape drives have form factors of both 5.25 and 3.5 inches. QIC data tape cartridge has quarter inch tape of about 1500 feet that is magnetic coated and also contains integral mechanism foe guidance and tape motion. Data from the hard drives of the computer system are recorded on the QIC tape’s 144 tracks in serial. QIC tape format assures easy archiving, backup and data’s restoration with the help of menu driven software. The tape drive writes the first track just below the QIC tape’s middle. Afterwards the drive head move up & down and from track to the other as one continuous tape length instead of parallel track series that run in the opposite direction. The drive head records the data in one direction on half of the tracks (on the top of QIC tape) and the recording of data is done in other direction on the remaining tracks on tape’s bottom half. The division of each track is further done into blocks. These blocks consist of bytes (512 or1024). It further divides into segments and 32 blocks usually make one segment.
